Food Safety

Vision

To be leaders in food safety education for families, the media, policy makers and the food industry in Michigan and abroad.

Mission

Recognizing that the provision of a safe food supply is fundamental to health and well-being, the mission of the Michigan State University Extension Food Safety Area of Expertise Team is to protect the health of the people of Michigan and abroad through the execution of sound research, the delivery of research-based educational programs, and the provision of reliable information to policy makers.

Workgroups

Consumer Education

The goal of the Consumer Education Workgroup is to develop and disseminate effective materials for educating both consumers and the media regarding pertinent food safety-related issues. The members’ efforts have led to the development of food safety mini-grants and a variety of food safety-related educational materials.

Professional Training

The Training Workgroup organizes food safety-related training sessions for a variety of audiences. HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points), ServSafe (Serving Food Safely), and food safety presentations on hot topics such as irradiation, biotechnology, and bovine tuberculosis have been the most common types of Training Programs that have been offered.

Social Dimensions

The Social Dimensions Workgroup investigates the sociological and communications aspects of food safety issues. The members are currently investigating the public’s perception of biotechnology and irradiation. They are also studying trends in the restaurant industry that are influenced by food safety issues.
